Sunscreen Every Day? Yes, Even in Canada.

We know — sunscreen feels like a "beach thing." But the truth is, your skin doesn't take days off, and neither does UV radiation. Whether you're commuting to work, running errands, or just sitting by a sunny window, your skin is exposed.

The good news? A little protection goes a long way.
What UV Rays Actually Do to Your Skin
The sun emits two main types of ultraviolet rays that reach your skin: UVA and UVB. UVB rays are the ones behind sunburns — they're strong and direct. UVA rays are sneakier; they penetrate deeper into the skin and are the primary cause of premature aging, dark spots, and long-term DNA damage. Both types are linked to skin cancer.
What's important to understand is that UVA rays are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and they can pass through glass. So yes, that sunny car ride or that afternoon by your office window counts.
How to Choose the Right Sunscreen
SPF 30 or higher — SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays. Go higher if you're spending extended time outdoors.
Broad-spectrum — This label means the product protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Always look for it.
Water-resistant — If you're sweating or swimming, look for a water-resistant formula and reapply every 80 minutes.
Mineral vs. Chemical — Mineral sunscreens (with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sit on top of the skin and deflect rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and neutralize UV energy. Both are effective; it comes down to skin type and preference.
For sensitive or acne-prone skin, mineral formulas tend to be gentler.
How and When to Apply
Apply 15–30 minutes before going outside so it has time to absorb and activate.
Use enough — most adults need about a teaspoon for the face and neck, and a shot glass worth for the body.
Don't forget these spots: ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet, and the back of your hands.
Reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors, or right after swimming or heavy sweating.
Year-round, not just summer — make it part of your morning routine like brushing your teeth.

Sunscreen is your first line of defense, but skin health is a bigger picture. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, and getting regular check-ups all contribute to how your skin ages and how quickly it recovers from damage. If you notice any new or changing spots, moles, or skin irregularities, don't wait — bring it up with a healthcare provider.
At Santé Beacon, our team is here to support your health from the inside out — whether that means blood screenings, preventive consultations, or just pointing you in the right direction.
